Meet Nhieu: A Story of Education and Inspiration

Nhieu has lived at Vinh Son 1 her entire life. When she was just a newborn, her grandmother and aunt made a difficult and loving decision. Carrying Nhieu with them, they traveled 55 kilometers by bus from their Rangao village to bring her to Vinh Son—a place where she would be safe, cared for, and given opportunities she could not have had otherwise.
What followed, however, is a story not of loss—but of growth. Today, at 14 years old, Nhieu is a confident, head-strong leader at Vinh Son 1. She is well liked by the other children and is often the go-to person when English is needed. She helps care for infants, supervises the computer lab, and is always willing to step up when responsibility is needed.
Nhieu has a quiet nature, but she carries a playful smile—one that suggests she’s always thinking, always observing, always a step ahead. She is an outstanding ninth-grade student whose favorite subjects are English, math, and music. She enjoys badminton, basketball, dancing, and listening to music, and she proudly performed at the Christmas Eve celebration at the Wooden Church.
There is also a remarkably serious and determined side to Nhieu. She speaks four languages: Rangao (the dialect of her village), Bahna (spoken at Vinh Son), Vietnamese, and English—the language, she says, of her future. She would also like to learn Korean.
Nhieu dreams big. She hopes to attend university in Ho Chi Minh City and become an elementary school teacher in Kon Tum. She wants to travel to the United States and Korea, and one day have two children—a boy and a girl.
At the heart of Nhieu’s academic success is Mr. Ho, her teacher since sixth grade. Mr. Ho teaches sixth through ninth grades—some of the most difficult and formative years for students. He has taught, inspired, encouraged, and patiently guided generations of Vinh Son children. Long after students move on to high school and college, Mr. Ho is remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
Nhieu is also inspired by three young women she has known her entire life at Vinh Son: Y May, Y Ngiu, and Y Hao, now second-year college students supported by FVSO scholarships. To Nhieu, they are living proof that higher education is possible. These scholarship students serve as leaders in the orphanage—mentoring gifted students, offering advice, and quietly shaping the dreams of younger children who look up to them. This is the power of education and example.
Through donor support, FVSO helps create a clear pathway from grade school to university. Without these opportunities, many Vinh Son children would never imagine themselves as college students—or believe such a future was meant for them.
Nhieu is deeply grateful for the chance to go to school. She knows that had she remained in her village, education would not have been possible. Because of Vinh Son—and because of generous donors—Nhieu is not only achieving academically; she is becoming a role model herself. Education is the key to success for Vinh Son children after they leave the orphanage. Nhieu’s life shows exactly what can happen when support, dedication, and belief come together. She is thriving. And she is just getting started.
In Nhieu’s Own Words:
“I am very thankful to live and study at Vinh Son. If I stayed in my village, I would not be able to go to school. At Vinh Son, I have teachers who care about me and help me believe in myself, especially Mr. Ho, who has taught me since sixth grade. I am inspired by the older girls who are in college now, because they show me that studying hard can change my life. I want to keep learning, go to university, and one day become a teacher so I can help children like me.”
